フロリダ育ちのブラッド・クロマーは、HUFのチームライダーとして長い間活躍しているだけではなく、クラフトに拘る多才なスケートボーダーである。フッテージから写真に至るまで、ブラッドの細部への拘りは、インスピレーションを与え続けるキャリアを築き上げてきた。
どのようにしてHUFチームに参加したのですか？
俺が初めてHUFというブランドを知ったのは、2009年頃サンフランシスコに住んでいた頃だね。当時、ノースビーチでJake Donnellyとルームシェアしてたんだ。ジェイクはRealでスケートしていたから、キースのことを知っていたんだ。ジェイクはよくHUFのギアをサポートされていて、カッコ良いなと思っていたよ。そして時が経過し、キースに出会ってからはDeluxeの奴らと一緒によく滑りに行くようになったね。今思い返すと、すごく良い時代だったね。
あなたとHUFの繋がりは何ですか？
HUFが作る服は格好良いと思っていたんだ。店、ライダー達、キース自身と彼のスケートスタイルや身のこなし、その全てがイケていたね。その後、キースが靴を作り始める話を聞いて、一緒に作らないかと誘ってくれたんだ。個人的にもキースの事は良く知っているし、リスペクトしているプロスケーターが自身のフットウエアブランドを立ち上げるという事実に惹かれたんだ。殆どのフットウエアブランドは、大企業のスーツを着た陰気な奴らが運営しているように見えていたんだ。だけど、HUFはオーガニックで本物だと感じていたし、実際そうだった。常に家族のように感じていたよ。
初めてキースに会った時のことを聞かせてもらえますか？
最初に会った時のことはよく覚えてないんだ。多分すごく緊張していたんだと思う。ジェイクが紹介してくれたか、Deluxeでハングアウトした時じゃないかな。キースがフェデラル・バンクでスケートしてるのを見ている事が楽しかったね。当時はよく一緒に図書館あたりでスケートしていたね。スポットからスポットへプッシュして、カーブを攻めているのを見ているだけで楽しかったよ。
HUFをどのように言い表しますか？
俺が感じているHUFのスペシャルなところは、とても自然に成長していたということだね。HUFのチームは、時間と共にあるべき姿に成長して今の形になったんだ。何事も無理矢理ではなく。Nate Broussardが最初のフットウエアのライダーだよ。分かるでしょ？そのあとはDan Plunkett、Joey Pepper、Dylan (Reider)、Peter Ramondettaという感じでリストは続くけど、みんなイケてる奴らばかり。俺は当時のチームも好きだし、今のチームも好きだね。最初から見てきたからクレイジーな感覚だね。今でもチームの一員でいられることに感謝してるよ。
HUFで最も思い出に残っていることはなんですか？
とても難しい質問だね。一つの思い出をピンポイントで選ぶのは簡単じゃないよ。期待している答えじゃないかもだけど、キースと過ごした時間は一つ一つ全部楽しかったね。ボスとして、友達として、スケートボーダーとして、彼と過ごした時間は全て良い思い出だね。
HUFが20周年を迎えたということは、あなたにとってはどんな意味がありますか？
とても嬉しいことだけど、驚きはしないね。キースはそれだけイケてるってことだよ。
キースのスタイルはスケートボードを様々な方向にプッシュしてきたと思います。あなたにとってスタイルとは？
本当その通りだね。キースはクリーンでポップであり、そしてリラックスしているのにとても力強い。俺にとってそのスタイルは大切なことだね。トリックの決め方やそれをどこで決めたか、どのトリックで攻めるか、どんな服を着ているか、全てが大切な要素なんだ。動画で撮影した時に伝わるものを撮りたいと俺は考えている。考えている事が口からスムーズに出てくる感覚わかるでしょ？俺のゴールはそんな感覚をスケートボードですること。あと、楽しむことだね。
Raised in Florida, Brad Cromer’s not only one of the longest-tenured HUF team riders, but a prolific skateboarder obsessed with craft. From his footage to his photos, Brad’s meticulous and that dedication to the details has forged a career that continues to inspire.
How did you formally get involved with HUF?
My first introduction to HUF as a brand was when I was living in SF on and off around 2009. I was staying in North Beach at the Newell house and shared a room with Jake Donnelly. He knew Keith through skating for Real and riding for the HUF shop. He’d come back some days with what I thought was the coolest HUF gear. As time went on, I met Keith and would skate with him and other Deluxe guys in the city. It was such a cool time now thinking back.
What was your connection to HUF?
I thought the clothing he was making was so cool. Just the general look and aesthetic of it all—the shop, the shop riders, Keith himself, his skating, the way he carried himself. It was all just so fucking cool to me. Soon after is when he approached me saying he was going to start making shoes and asked if I was interested in being a part of it. I was drawn to the fact that Keith—an actual tangible, well-established pro skateboarder, that I personally knew and hugely respected— was starting his own footwear brand. I saw most other shoe brands as being run by these evil shadowy big corp suit guys. It just felt so organic and genuine, and it was. It has always felt like family.
Can you talk about the first time you met Keith?
I can't think of the exact first time meeting Keith. I was probably super nervous. It was for sure either through Jake or hanging out at Deluxe. I mean, watching him skate federal banks was a treat. We skated the library a good bit around that time. Even skating from spot to spot and watching him snap up and down curbs was a treat.
How would you define HUF?
What is special to me about HUF is how naturally it grew. The team just became what it was over time in the exact way it should have. Nothing was forced. To start out with Nate Broussard as the first footwear rider? Come on. Then to Dan Plunkett, Joey Pepper, Dylan (Rieder), Peter Ramondetta. The list goes on of just such cool people. I loved the team then and I love the team now. It's been crazy watching it from the beginning. I'm very grateful to still be a part of the brand.
What is your most memorable story during your time with HUF?
Man, that’s such a hard question to answer. It's not easy to pinpoint one specific time. This may not be the answer you are looking for but I enjoyed every moment I had with Keith. The whole time with him was memorable as a boss figure, a friend, a skateboarder... all of the above.
What does it mean to you that HUF has reached 20 Years?
It makes me so happy but honestly, it doesn’t surprise me. Keith is just that cool.
Keith's style really pushed skating in a different direction. What does style mean to you?
For sure. He was clean, poppy, relaxed yet super powerful. To me style is huge. The way a trick is done, where it was done, the trick chosen, and the outfit all plays a big part. I want to film things that will translate correctly on to film. You know how some words just roll right off the tongue? My goal is to do that on a skateboard. That and have fun.
